Play as a mercenary first will help with your money until you see the chance to get a good town. Only then apply as a noble. Getting a good town, high prosperity and in a safe zone with less chance of being raid will help you a lot. Try to capture another one or two near it, it will be easier to protect.
Receive. This would be the way we recommend for you to get a castle. If you manage to get to clan Tier 2, you can now join a faction as a vassal. Once you’ve done that, you can just help their armies conquer a castle, and you have a chance, based on your relationship with the influential lords of the kingdom, to gain the fief in a vote.
Recruiting minor factions needs an overhaul. The AI should not be able to recruit mercenary clan from the player faction, if they are at war and they should not be able to recruit via telepathy. We need telepathy skill too. In medieval times a King doesnt always travel around the world to find mercenary leader.

The king usually actually pays for your entire party until you start getting to expensive and then he still pays for about 80% of it. #6.
If you're referring to who to become a mercenary/vassal of, I chose the Northern Empire first since that's where I spawned and chose to just learn the game there. Before they got completely wiped by the Khuzaits on my map, I went with Battanians because their armor, archers, and infantry are badass.
